SILK EMBROIDERIED MEMORIAL TO
MRS. EUNICE LOTHROP
Attributed to Clara Lothrop, Cohasset, Massachusetts 1809
In Memory/ of/ Mrs. Eunice Lothrop/ who died/ May 9th 1809/ Aet 35
Eunice Burr Lothrop was born May 1, 1774, one of four children born to Isaac Burr and Mary Beal. She married Anselm
Lothrop, Oct. 22, 1794. They had three children; Clara (1796-1864), James (1800-1873), and Anselm (1805-1880).
Clara married Caleb Nichols (1795-1868) in Cohasset and they had six children.
The tree in Clara's memorial to her mother is typical of the work done at Byfield Academy where she may have attended
school. However, there was a school in Cohasset and several in nearby Hingham. It is possible that a teacher trained
in Byfield brought the pattern to the area. An important group of watercolors depicting the Lothrop and Nichols
families were painted in Cohasset and date from 1812-1832.
Silk and watercolor on silk; 18 ¾" x 21 ½" framed.
$5,500.
