Watercolor Memorial
Dedicated to Stephen Fuller
Boston, MA c.1833
This beautifully painted memorial was most likely copied from a print source that was used for both watercolors
and silk embroideries worked in the Boston area.
Inscribed, “Sacred to the Memory of Stephen Fuller. Who died May 22, 1833. Aged 53 years.”
Stephen Fuller (1774-1833) married Lucy Hatch (1783-1845) daughter of Col. Israel Hatch in Boston. They had two
children James, and Caroline - who probably painted the memorial. She married Jason Boyden in 1835.
Stephen Fuller owned and operated Fuller’s Tavern, also referred to as the old Half Way House, one of New England’s
most famous hostelries built in 1807 on the Norfolk and Bristol Turnpike to accommodate stage coach travel between
Boston and Providence. Caroline must have had an interesting and colorful childhood.
Watercolor and ink on paper; 19 ½” x 23 ½”, sight.
Exhibited at the Morris Museum, NJ, 1991.
Ex-collection, The Fertig Folk Art Collection
