Mary Chase
Painted memorial to her father
New Hampshire c. 1820
The monument is inscribed: Sacred to the memory/ Moses Chase/ who died, Nov. 5th AD1819/ Ag 56.
This watercolor memorial was most likely painted by Mary Chase (1801-1869), the only daughter of Moses Chase, shortly
after his death in 1819. Moses Chase (1763-1819) born in Newton, Rockingham, New Hampshire, and married Mary Noyes
(1767-1853) in Newbury, Massachusetts. They had six children and resided in Plaistow, New Hampshire.
Mary surrounded her watercolor with a painted mat trimmed with gold foil, emulating a reverse painted glass, which
is etremely rare. This charming little memorial is only 15" x 17" with the frame.
