MEMORIAL TO
OLIVER BUNKER ?
New England c.1810-20
In memory/ of/ Mr. Oliver/ Bunker(?)/ Aged
Although the monument to Oliver ? is most impressive, he is yet to be identified. The scene is unusual and somewhat
reminiscent of paintings done at the Windsor Female Academy in Windsor, VT. The tall thin figures in black are
contrasted with the soft palette of the background. The small figure in white is completely surrounded by what
appears to be her mother’s skirt. The trees directly behind the monument look like a series of umbrellas, while
the cloud formation is an interlocking puzzle.
Watercolor and ink on silk; 15 ½” x 17 ½” sight, 20 ½” x 22 ½” framed.
$9,500.
