Maria Hulbert
Abby Wright School
South Hadley, MA c.1805
Maria Hulbert stitched this unusual composition c.1805 memorializing her parents and positioned two figures
(probably representing herself and a sister) as mirror images beside heavily embellished monuments that, characteristically
of Abby Wright School, are trimmed with silver metallic thread. The background is a graphically stylized ground
cover with intricately worked weeping willow trees.
Maria Hulbert (1788-1810) of Middletown, Connecticut was one of nine children born to Hezekiah Hulbert (1749-1800)
and Hannah Clark (1753-1796) his second wife. He had three children by his first wife and two more by his third.
Her mother died in childbirth when she was eight and she was just twelve when her father died. Maria died unmarried
in Lowville, New York.
