Lititz, PA Moravian School watercolor memorial to Michael Gundaker circa 1815
A rare and exquisite example of a circa 1815 watercolor memorial from the Moravian school in Lititz, Pennsylvania.
An early hand written note on the back states: "This picture was the tomb of Michael Gundaker who died in
1815 the women are his daughters one of the daughter painted the picture -- My grandfather E. W. Evans Spangenberg".
The design was probably drawn by Samuel Reinke who was an artist working at the school in 1815 - 16. See Betty
Ring's," Girlhood Embroidery" pg 444 for more information.
The fact that this is a watercolor on paper, and not embroidery on silk, makes this extremely rare, and possibly
the only known watercolor memorial from this school.
Michael Gundaker's daughters are included in the listing of students that attended the Lititz Moravian Girls School
and no doubt one of them, probably Elizabeth or Catherine, in coordination with Samuel Reinke is responsible for
the creation of this stunning memorial to a "HAPPY FATHER HIGHLY BLEST".
The picture retains its original frame and decorative wallpaper backing.
Watercolor on paper; 27" x 26" framed, 19" x 18" sight.
