Sophia Dudley
Silk Embroidered Memorial
Mrs. Rowson's Academy
Boston, MA Dated 1815
This memorial depicts a young lady, presumably the maker, sitting by a monument under a weeping willow tree
on a small peninsula jutting into a body of water with trees on the far shore all under a beautifully painted sky
of soft pinks and blues.
Sophia was born in 1799, in Roxbury, MA, to Elijah Dudley and Elizabeth Weld. At age 16 in 1815, while attending
Mrs. Rowson's Academy, located on Hollis St. in Boston near Roxbury, she worked this beautiful silk embroidered
memorial honoring her older brother who died at age 21 the previous year. The monument is inscribed: SACRED TO
THE MEMORY OF MR BENJAMIN DUDLEY OBIT MARCH 16, 1814 . AE 21. The bottom of the reverse painted glass is inscribed:
Wrought at Mrs Rowson's Academy by Mifs Sophia Dudley 1815.
This stunning memorial retains the original frame and painted glass.
