Catherine Langdon Wright
"These are my jewels"
Suzanne Rowson's School
Boston, MA 1808

This silk embroidery depicts the story of Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi, a 2nd century Roman matron, widowed and the mother of three children who is known for her goodness, shown here visiting a very wealthy lady showing her jewelry. When Cornelia was asked about her jewels, she pointed to her children and said, "These are my jewels." The scene is taken from an Angelica Kauffman painting and engraving of 1788.

Catherine worked this at age 11 in 1808. She was the daughter of Edmund Wright and Mary Pratt and at age 26, in 1823, married Lewis G. Pray a shoe maker and hymn writer.
