This large, beautifully executed, extremely graphic sampler worked by Anna Thompson exhibits typical Canterbury-style
motifs including baskets of flowers, hillocks, birds, and exquisitely developed flowering vine borders. It is inscribed,
“Anna Jane Thompson’s, Wrought in the/ fifteenth year of her age June 12 A.D 1823”.
The incredible samplers from Canterbury, NH are all the more intriguing when one realized that it was a public
school and not an expensive private academy. This example represents one of the finest from the school.
Anna Jane Thompson was born on May 15, 1809, in Canterbury, New Hampshire, the child of James and Margaret 'Peggy'.
She married Dudley Hill Prescott and they had one son together. She then married Lowel Brown on January 3, 1841,
in Epsom, New Hampshire. She died on May 18, 1901, in New Hampshire, at the impressive age of 92, and was buried
there.
