Antique needlework sampler
Princeton, MA dated 1806
Harriet at aged 11 stitched this needlework sampler featuring a center hall house, various spot motifs, and
an interesting verse about female decorum and the art of needlework.
Let Female artists blithe & gay/ Their skill in needlework display/ Attentively observing rules/ That ever
sway --- politest school.
An early note on the back reads “Harriet Read born in 1794 at Claremont, N. H. a granddaughter of Thomas Mason
and Mary Baxter of Medfield”.
Harriet, was the daughter of John Read and Mary Mason (of Princeton, MA). In 1816, she married Daniel Adams, a
lawyer who graduated from Harvard in 1799, they had 6 children.
Silk on linen; 15 ½” x 12 ½” sight.
