Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Newport, RI Needlwork Sampler c.1785 from Huber

Sarah Nichols
18th century American Sampler
Newport, RI c.1785

Charming 18th century Newport, RI band sampler inscribed: SARAH NICHOLS BORN APRIL 21 1776.

Sarah stitched a man and woman standing by a tree and a center hall house with some flowering motifs. She also included alphabets, numerals, and the following verses.

Little I from vanity/ Must allways fly and This Needle Work of mine can tell/ I in my Youth Was Learned Well/ and by my Elders also Taught/ Not to sPend my Time for Nought

Sarah must have been quite young when she worked this delightful little sampler so it was likely stitched between 1781 and 1785.

Silk on linen; 14" x 8 ½" framed.
