This classic 18th century Boston, MA area sampler is inscribed, "Mary Kendall's work wrought in the thirteenth year of her age". Wide outer borders with deep arcades, sawtooth inner border surrounding verse, central pot of flowers, house and figures are characteristic of samplers from the Cambridge area. Mary included mirror image motifs of a mother and child, white birds outlined in black, and heart and flowers.

Mary (1779-1849), was the fourth of 10 children born to Joshua Kendall (1746-1818) and Susanna Shattuck (1756-1803) of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
