Antique needlework sampler
Portland, Maine dated 1820
Jane worked this sampler at age 16, in 1820, while attending school in Portland, ME. It is embellished with several
alphabets, numerals, and a graphic townscape at the bottom that includes three classic houses, ducks in a pond,
and sheep in the pasture.
Jane was one of eight children born to Paul Dyer and Sarah Waterhouse Dyer. Her father was soldier in the Revolutionary
War and after the war was a cooper, fisherman, and farmer.
Jane at age 20 married Ebenezer D. Niles of Portland and died at age 95 in 1900.
