Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Hannah Davis sampler from Huber

Hannah Davis
Antique needlework sampler
Gloucester, MA 1818

Hannah at aged 11, stitched this very pleasing and rare family record sampler probably in or around Gloucester, MA. The pillars connected with flowering vines combined with the overall composition are unusual, making the origin of the sampler difficult to determine solely by its stylistic characteristics.

Hannah was the daughter on Capt. Stephen Low Davis (b. Feb 1, 1779) of Gloucester and Elizabeth Crockering (b. May 8, 1785) of Marblehead who were married Nov. 6, 1806. It appears that Hannah’s parents lived in Gloucester, MA

Silk on linen; 16 5/8 x 16 7/8 inches sight.
