Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

darning sampler 1801 from Huber

Unreadable name "anonymous" darning sampler with spot flowers motifs dated 1801

Darning samplers are a needlework art form designed to develop a very practical skill. Textiles, whether household or clothing, were quite expensive and darning holes in them was common place, even among the relatively well off. Having the skill to recreate the weaving pattern was a great asset. Darning samplers from England and the Netherlands are more prevalent than those from the United States.

Silk on linen; 17 " x 17" framed.
