Anne Kent Anne was only eight years old in 1785 when she stitched this beautiful sampler that incorporates numerals and
several alphabets, a verse about the strength of virtue: Virtue Alone Needs No Defence, No Arms But Its Own
Innocence, And an inscription: Anne Kent Was Born January The 21st 1777 Wrought/ The Sampler 1785.
At the bottom she created a delightful embroidered vignette depicting a vase of flowers, trees and black and
white sheep on green hillocks along with flying birds and insects. The sampler is framed with a three-sided undulating
vine and flower border.
