MARGARET ROOME, NEW YORK, DATED 1798

Needlework sampler worked in silk threads on a linen ground; signed Margaret Roome, Her Work Aged 10, years, April 12, 1798.

EXHIBITED: American Needlework Treasures: Samplers and Silk Embroideries from the Collection of Betty Ring at the Museum of American Folk Art (fig. 49)

NOTE: Margaret's vine enclosed signature and Indian- pink border occur often on Pennsylvania samplers, but her Adam and Eve are worked in the manner of Colonial New York pieces, and similar cherry pickers appear on a sampler dated 1792 by Christina Arcularius, which named New York (New-York Historical Soctetv ).

Margaret Roome (1788-187?) dated her sampler on her tenth birthday. She was the daughter of William Roome (1764-1788) and Margaret Pray of New York. Margaret Roome married Caleb Stockton Halsted (1787-1827) October 19, 1808. They lived in Elizabethtown, New Jersey and had six chrildren. She later married Job Haines, they had no chrildren.
