Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

bottom of the sampler dated 1660

Band sampler dated 1660 from Huber

Band Sampler
17th century
English dated 1660

This early band sampler is profuse with intricate stitching techniques. At the top are typical very finely stitched motifs and an alphabet followed with several bands of white-work, bands of drawn-work, bands of cut and drawn-work, and at the bottom is an white-work queen stitch alphabet ending with the date 1660.

Band samplers, popular in the 17th century, were made to record patterns that could later be used for a needlework project. They were rolled and kept in the work basket and not intended to be framed. Great pride was taken in their making and most of the band samplers are worked in reversible stitching so that the back looks like the front.

Silk on linen; 30" x 11" framed.
